The Tree of Knowledge-the story behind this artistic creation

As promised here is a look into my “The Tree of Knowledge of good and evil” or as I’ve called it  “עֵץ הַדַּעַת טוֹב וָרָע”  -(Etz ha-da’at tov va-ra) Which is the Hebrew equivalent.

Not surprising this religious themed piece is inspired by the Judeo-Christian account of the Tree of Knowledge as found in Genesis in the Bible.

I was also inspired by the Exodus account of the twelve tribes and use of semi precious stones used in the Temple as well as the blue Pomegranates along the high priests robes as described in Exodus.

I wanted the piece to be rich of symbolism and the dichomety of good and evil thus the stark contrast between light and dark in the split composition of the tree with the serpent being the dividing factor.

So I incorporated rows of seed beads,  1000+ rhinestones for their reflective qualities and a wide assortment of semi precious stones. The list of which I will update later (once I find my list haha)

90 second lime light- Art in the community of Fort Saskatchewan

A while back I got a random call one afternoon from Diane Yanch, the Culture & Historic Precinct Supervisor of the city telling me that Shaw was going to be doing a piece on our city, Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta and asked if I’d mind being interviewed to discuss Art and community.

At the time I remember thinking “sure no prob” I’ve been interviewed on radio and in print before…no biggie…it wasn’t until I told my husband that it dawned on me Shaw is a TV station Haha.

Needless to say being a newbie to TV I had a few butterflies floating about but I made out ok. I loaded up 3 paintings for  my background including my latest Tree of Knowledge piece that I discussed last post, Despair an Acrylic 24″ x 36″ painting and a untitled poured abstract 2′ x 4′ and made my way down to set up.

Once we figured out how to attach a mic to a shrug and conceal wires we were golden. Though not shown I did start off the interview joking that “I paint so I don’t have to talk much” lol with much chopping and cropping later below is my 90 second contribution to this piece on Art in the community.

Thanks for watching! And stay tuned for more art and posts (as time and memory permit) 🎨

Midnight in the Garden

I’m still painting up a frenzy over here!
I started working on this piece which once done will be called ‘Midnight in the Garden’
It’s a square, 24″x 24″ gallery profiled mixed media painting.
I used a variety of mediums to build up layers and texture on the piece. I started with has a teal, napthol red and white wash followed by layers of glass beads, modeling paste and fiber paste.
Once that was dried I painted it in a variety of purples, magentas and greens with a touch of blues.
Once dried I started on the color pours and collect the run off at the bottom for a string layer on top. From here I’m planning on potentially adding some white paint sprays and black lava then transforming the finish into a matte layer.
Here are some of my in progress shots.

Well I should run, my baby turned 2 yesterday so today is her family party ❤
Have a great weekend!
Cheers,
Amanda
