Behind the Paint brush

Behind the Brush

…it’s been awhile since I’ve said hello and introduced myself to all my new followers.
So here’s a little bit about me and my art.
I’m Amanda Milke, I live in Fort Saskatchewan just outside of Edmonton, Alberta Canada. I’m originally from #Moncton NB so I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing the best of Canada it’s oceans and it’s mountains and they both have my heart.
I’m a self taught artist and have been painting and creating since 1995 probably earlier. Originally I focused on acrylic abstract/impressionist portraits and then gradually started exploring different mediums while we were living and teaching English in Japan.

Gradually over time, my style evolved into mixed media. I kept my love for acrylic’s bright bold colors and paired them with acrylic mediums and found elements for texture. My creative inspiration comes from my faith. I am a follower of Jesus, I like to say a practicing Christian because everyday is a work in progress.

I love using my mixed media elements with my faith theme because it reminds me that we aren’t one dimensional beings. Each and everyone of us is multifaceted and can be seen from different angles. I love using broken and found objects and recreating them into art because it reminds me of redemption. No matter how broken or lost we are we can be transformed into a work of art. And lastly I use bright colors and reflective rhinestones in my work to symbolize the joy, light and hope we have. Too often art focuses on the dark and hopelessness of life and I just want to spread some love, light and hope around with my paintbrush 🖌❤

Breath of Heaven – NOA Art Auction

Night of Artists is having their annual Art Auction and my submission this year is an

18″ x 24″ mixed media painting called “Breath of Heaven”.

BreathofHeaven_AmandaMilke_7806915787

Most of my paintings tend to be inspired by a Bible passage but the inspiration for this piece comes from several different verses that all spoke to me.

By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth Psalm 33:6

In his hands is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind. Job 12:10

The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life. Job 33:4

You see my grandmother who I am very close with has by God’s grace survived through skin cancer, colon cancer and lung cancer and has now recently had more cancer found in her other lung.  As I was thinking over the unfairness that is cancer and was petitioning God for healing for her I was given this image and message that even though the breath in her lungs may fail her body, the breath of God in her soul will never fail. The same breath that formed the Heavens and gave life and form to everything can also live within us and that alone is awe inspiring to me.  So in this painting the “sky” breathes, as layers of cells/earth have life and breath radiating out of them.

If you’d like to own this one of kind mixed media painting you can place your bid online here: noa

“Immersion” coming 2019

I love creating art around a theme or concept and for 2019 that theme is “Immersion”.

I’ve been inspired by how prominent water is used as a symbol in the bible from the sea of Galilee to the many miracles that center around it and I wanted to create a body of art that encompasses that wet and wild imagery.

So, throughout 2019 my media feeds will be flooded with many water based paintings which hopefully will culminate into “Immersion” a gallery exhibit that will immerse you the viewer into this wet, wonderful world.

For now, here is a look at some past and present and in progress pieces to immerse your senses in.

Wedding of the Lamb

20180402_114857

So sometimes paintings just seem to happen. I’m going about my business and then a canvas kind of screams at me and the next thing I know I have a new painting on the go. That’s exactly what happened with this painting. I wanted to do a lamb piece to go with my series of Biblical inspired animals but I hadn’t planned this lol.

I sat down one morning and it just flowed out of me by the time lunch had come the layout was complete and that’s the way this painting kept evolving. Every time I sat down it was a whirlwind of creation and the next step would be complete. It’s crazy how God can use my talents for his purpose. I thought all along that this would be an Easter piece and I thought for the longest time I would call it “the Passover lamb” but the more I painted and embellished and layered and texturized the more it seemed like it was a celebratory piece. Not a pre-cross sacrificial painting but a joyful conquered death let’s party type of painting and so what’s more jubilant than a wedding.

So here the lamb is clean and radiant. The flowers are in bloom, he is crowned and gleaming wearing his bridegroom clothes of covered in song and ready for the church his bride. The work has been done and now it’s time to celebrate.

Each sets of words woven into the lambs wool is a hymn title, I emphasized the trinity by crowning in in triplicate “holy”s on his forehead.

He is clean and pure adorned in gold and sparkling rhinestones that flash and glimmer in the light and he seems to radiate and glow.

The birds who fly and adorn him with music singing are gold and jeweled but pale in comparison to the light surrounding him.

20180402_114635

New life grows up from his feet and even the earth is growing with hymns embedded in it. I did a double emphasis on “art” along the bottom of the piece because I do believe God enjoys art and to be praised through it as I’ve spoke on in previous posts.

And finally the lambs position of facing straight out at the viewer was intentional because Biblically we as Christians make up the body of the Church, and the Church is the Bride of Christ so here the Bridegroom, Christ is looking at us the Church on his Wedding day as through him we are made pure and holy and most assuredly ready to celebrate.

I used a large variety of materials to create this painting including genuine peridot stone chips, rhinestone crystals, gold leaf, paper clay, modeling paste, acrylic, oil paint sticks, beads and old choir music / hymns.

I’d love to hear what you think of this painting or any of my other works. You can comment below or email me and I’ll be happy to respond.

Cheers,

Amanda

Midnight in the Garden

I’m still painting up a frenzy over here!
I started working on this piece which once done will be called ‘Midnight in the Garden’
It’s a square, 24″x 24″ gallery profiled mixed media painting.
I used a variety of mediums to build up layers and texture on the piece. I started with has a teal, napthol red and white wash followed by layers of glass beads, modeling paste and fiber paste.
Once that was dried I painted it in a variety of purples, magentas and greens with a touch of blues.
Once dried I started on the color pours and collect the run off at the bottom for a string layer on top. From here I’m planning on potentially adding some white paint sprays and black lava then transforming the finish into a matte layer.
Here are some of my in progress shots.

Well I should run, my baby turned 2 yesterday so today is her family party ❤
Have a great weekend!
Cheers,
Amanda

Shiny & New

OK so I came down sick with a cold and haven’t had a chance to start on the guitar asides from prime it. I’ve been passing out pretty hard after the kids are in bed the last few nights so haven’t gotten anything done really asides from basic survival lol.

BUT a new order of supplies arrived today…

image

I’ve been wanting to dabble in hand stamping for awhile now but just haven’t gotten around to it until now, when I was asked to do a custom order as a Father’s Day Gift. So much fun 🙂 I’ll post pics of the completed project later.

This week however, I have to finish that order, go to the Farmers Market Thursday and I have the Downtown Sale on Saturday so I’m thinking the guitar will have to wait til next week sadly…but I do have yet another project stewing in my brain that involves a pair of wooden clogs 😉 but I’ll save that for another post.

For now I’ll say goodnight & Cheers!
