Night of Artists is having their annual Art Auction and my submission this year is an
18″ x 24″ mixed media painting called “Breath of Heaven”.
Most of my paintings tend to be inspired by a Bible passage but the inspiration for this piece comes from several different verses that all spoke to me.
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth Psalm 33:6
In his hands is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind. Job 12:10
The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life. Job 33:4
You see my grandmother who I am very close with has by God’s grace survived through skin cancer, colon cancer and lung cancer and has now recently had more cancer found in her other lung. As I was thinking over the unfairness that is cancer and was petitioning God for healing for her I was given this image and message that even though the breath in her lungs may fail her body, the breath of God in her soul will never fail. The same breath that formed the Heavens and gave life and form to everything can also live within us and that alone is awe inspiring to me. So in this painting the “sky” breathes, as layers of cells/earth have life and breath radiating out of them.

I love creating art around a theme or concept and for 2019 that theme is “Immersion”.
I’ve been inspired by how prominent water is used as a symbol in the bible from the sea of Galilee to the many miracles that center around it and I wanted to create a body of art that encompasses that wet and wild imagery.
So, throughout 2019 my media feeds will be flooded with many water based paintings which hopefully will culminate into “Immersion” a gallery exhibit that will immerse you the viewer into this wet, wonderful world.
For now, here is a look at some past and present and in progress pieces to immerse your senses in.
I started this piece this summer at my Blue Pomegranate exhibit to show visitors to the gallery what one of my pieces looks like stripped down, bare bones. This is still a work in progress.
I’m gradually getting back to painting after battling a major artist block due in part by me questioning my purpose. How can I use this gift of craftsmanship to further God’s kingdom.
Art is a tough gift because it’s almost been eradicated from the church so there are no solid church based mentors to come alongside you and help you work out the path to walk and the regular pastors/church leaders seem to discredit it as having no real benefit to the body of the church seeing it as just superficial pretty pictures.
My goal is to prove them wrong. If I am created by a creative God to create then there has to be a purpose and daily I am striving to find it. Revelation talks of the tree of life that believers will be able to eat from and have eternal life and how the leaves are for the healing of the nations.
I love this image of the tree and its healing properties. It makes me question, what if just putting beauty, truth and goodness back out into this world right now in the form of faith based art is a way to refresh and remind the worlds souls that there is more than what is seen right now and there is hope for a future and maybe it stirs up something inside you that sets you off searching out how YOU can experience it. Isn’t that something worthwhile, you can read 100 books on how to have a better life or maybe one day a painting will inspire you to read the one book that will change your life forever?
I have to try for your soul and mine.
God is great! And this is my gift and I want to share my journey with you. So maybe one day we can both eat from the real tree of life.
Nothing is a better word picture to me of the relationship of God with humanity than that of an Artist preparing for an exhibit.
You see right now I sit in my studio surrounded by a ton of artwork “in progress” as I get ready for my upcoming solo exhibit in June.
Each piece needs something different to turn it into the artwork I had intended it to be. Some may just need a few changes here and there while others maybe so off course that whole sections need to be gesoed and started over so that piece can be transformed into it’s intended image to show at the exhibit.
Friends that’s what God wants for us. We are very much his artwork, his works “in progress”. He wants to smooth out those rough edges, fill us in with full color and transform us into the individual beautiful masterpiece he intended us to be ready to exhibit in front of heaven and earth while proclaiming “it is Good”!
I know the thought of handing over those rough areas on our canvas to God to gesoe over and paint over can seem daunting. We’ve often been so accustomed to seeing them there that we can’t picture it any other way but God knows what you were made to look like and though there may seem to be pain and fear in the process, there is always Joy in the transformation. So whatever God might be nudging you to let him work on in your life remember be brave and fearless and trust the Master Artist because friend you will be more beautiful and so much closer to the masterpiece you were made to be when he’s done.
