WTF is ART issue#5 “Is ART the new Gold?”

I came across this article while I was browsing the net and thought it would make for an interesting read/debate.

Sarah Thornton explains why art is a beacon of optimism as markets tumble.

You can read the full telegraph article here then join in on the discussion.

So what do you think? Is art the new gold, the new safe market investment?

Thornton says that “museum attendance has surged and more people than ever began calling themselves artists”.

But the question I’m asking myself is: Is museum attendance and artist growth a good thing?

On one hand, the increase in artists and art may mean an artistic boom in the art market making this type of investment more widely accessible But on the flip side what happens generally when you get an abundance of something? Well in a market sense if you have 100 stocks versus 10,000 stocks the 100 stocks are going to be more valuable? But when those same 100 stocks turn into 10,000 the value plummets.

How does that translate to the art world?

Does it translate to the art world?

If every artist is a gold bar, then when gold bars(artists) increase will the value drop?

In societies past art was valued and of value because it was a rare commodity but today artists are a growing trend because the internet has helped us/them reach beyond our city or home base making us/them more easily accessible.

But, Thorton doesn’t say artists are the new gold she says ART is the new GOLD.

What does that mean?

Think about it…what does art have the makes it so valuable?

Well, How about the uniqueness of each and every piece?

It’s like no gold bar is alike making each and every piece valuable.

So yes, perhaps ART is the new GOLD to invest in.

But, the question I want to leave with you is this:

Who decides what is “pure gold” and what is “fools gold” when it comes to art?

Isn’t every piece being genuinely unique enough and valuable unto itself?

Stockpiled creativity

Morning/Afternoon/Whatever time of day it is,

Today feels more like business than pleasure.

(Which granted isn’t necessarily a bad thing since it’s the Art business.)

I’ve  spent the morning scanning some art to make into prints for the trade show in November.

I’m hoping to do up a bunch and whatever doesn’t sell at the tradeshow will be put online to sell.

So as I was scanning, I came across a postcard sized piece I did last Christmas while on a train ride to Tokyo and thought I’d share it with you today.

So as is the norm, I was sitting with my feet up. I have this tendency to either sit crossed legged or with my feet on something. I’ll probably suffer with bad hips or arthritis when I’m older but what are you going to do. I also had the camera with me because we were taking pictures out the train window. So I snapped this pictures of my feet and thought it made for an interesting composition. Continue reading “Stockpiled creativity”

Guitar Commission-Part Three the conclusion

Well, the guitar commission is finally finished and delivered to the customer.

I’m still not quite sure if I like it with or without the hands better,

but it doesn’t matter since the customer is happy with it.

Just for fun, here’s a look at the progress again:

1-acoustic guitar

2-Sanded and primed

3-background roughed out

4-background details added

5-addition of the hands

6-hand details

7-re-assembled, signed and sealed. Only thing missing are the strings.

Now it’s going to live happily ever after mounted on a wall for display.

If you’d like to commission a used or broken instrument for display,  or any other artwork

email me at themilkeway@gmail.com

Oh and I’ve added a commission gallery where I’ll be putting all the artwork that I receive as commissions.

Cheers for now!

Guitar Commission-Part 2 and 1/2

Just a quick note to let you all know that I have finished the guitar.

It is currently signed and sealed but yet to be delivered.

I’ll be delivering the finished piece to by customer tomorrow at which point I will post the completed photo’s.

I would have finished sooner but our car was stolen Friday which needless to say, had an adverse effect on my creativity level.

With this commission finished I can focus my energies into creating things for the November trade show.

I’m planning on having an assortment of prints for sale, a bit of photography and of course some original artwork.

Oh and the business cards are all finished and printed looking quite artsy if I do say so myself 😉

Well I guess that’s it for now.

Cheers/G-night
